بعد فضائح سجن أبي غريب وأساليب التعذيب البشعة التي كان المحققون الأمريكان يتبعونها مع السجناء العراقيين الذين لا ذنب لهم، وما تلا ذلك من فضائح طالت كبار المسؤولين الأمريكيين من المحافظين الجدد ورجال القانون الذي وضعوا أو أجازوا أساليب التعذيب والإذلال، جاء هذا الكتاب وكأن صاحبه بشكل مباشر أو غير مباشر يبرئ نفسه من تلك التهم البشعة التي ألصقت بالمحققين.
يسرد الكتاب أحداث دخول القوات الأمريكية الى العراق، وكيفية اعتقالها للرئيس صدام حسين، بكل ما في هذه الأحداث من تفاصيل. والكاتب هو المحقق الذي يعتبر نفسه صاحب الفضل في عملية الاعتقال.
يحاول الكاتب أن يظهر مهارته كمحقق ويعدد أساليب الترغيب والوعود التي كان يكيلها للمتهمين وهو يدرك تمام الإدراك أن شيئاً من وعوده لن يتحقق. وتأتي قمة الاستغفال عندما يروي تفاصيل التحقيق مع صديق ومرافق صدام حسين (محمد ابراهيم) الذي باعه للأمريكان ببساطة مقابل وعد بإطلاق سراحة وحمايته هو وجميع أفراد أسرته. وذلك هو أسلوب الأمريكان الذي عهدناه، والذي لن يتغير أبداً. أما ما لم يشرحه، فهو تخبط القوات الأمريكية المغيرة وحيرتها أمام المقاومة. ومدى الخوف الذي كان يعشعش في نفوس الأمريكان كمحتلين.
قد يكون هذا الكتاب قصة سردية لعمل مؤلفه، لكنه يعطينا مجالاً واسعاً للتفكير، واستنباط أمور أخرى غير موجودة في الكتاب.
