"سكاراموش" من أكثر روايات ساباتيني شهرة. تقع أحداثها في فرنسا الثائرة، وتحكي قصة تحول "البريتاني" المتشائم، المحامي أندريه –لويس مورو، إلى مدع راديكاليـ انفلاتي، يلعب دور الممثل ويحمي المدرس الذي ينجرف نحو التمرد بعد مقتل صديقه فلموران.
وعلى غير عادة الخرافة الشعبية التي تصور الثورة، لم يكن هنالك محاولة لإظهار الرومانسية في الطبقة الأرستقراطية. إنها تصور بشكل متكرر، التباين الثقافي مع الفلاحين الرعاع، وفي محاولة للمحافظة على وجهة نظر البطل المتشائمة، لم يرسم سباتيني أياً من الجوانب بضوء شديد التفاؤل، كون الجنس البشري بشكل عام يميل إلى الحيوانية.
إن مجموعة الممثلين الذين جمعهم هم فريق مسافر من الارتجاليين، كوميديا تقليدية لشركة "دل آرت" وهذا القسم هو الأكثر أهمية في الرواية، حيث تظهر نوعية أبحاث ساباتيني عبر طريقة تعطي ملخصاً ممتازاً (واحدة من أفضل ما يقرأ) للشخصيات التقليدية التي تصنع مثل هذه المجموعة.
