طلب مني تلميذي الدكتور محمد فوزي رحيل، تقديم كتابه الذي نحن بصدده، وقد عرف الدكتور محمد بأنه دؤوب، فلا يشرع في عمل إلا وأتي عليه، كما وأن كتابه اختص بفترة إحدى وأربعين عامًا من عمر مملكة عكا الصليبية، وهي فترة لم يتناولها باحث أكاديمي الاهتمام. وحسنة الباحث تأصيله لموضوع بحثه على وجه يعز على الكثيرين، من باحثي الحروب الصليبية، فقد ضم ملاحق كثيرة جلها نقل للعربية للمرة الأولى، كما وأن هذا الكتاب هو باكورة أبحاثه في تاريخ الحرب الصليبية وهذا يحسب له.
وقد اتبع المؤلف خطة رصينة مكنته من الإحاطة بموضوع بحثه محللًا ضعف الوجود الصليبي أو عدم التجانس الديموغرافي كما أبان المؤلف أسباب ضعف فكرة الحروب الصليبية، وأن الغلبة المملوكية على مملكة عكا الصليبية ليس مجرد صراع عسكري انتهى بالنصر المملوكي الشهير ولكن كان صراعًا اقتصاديًا إلى جانب النزاع والتخاصم بين صليبي عكا.
وأخلص إلى أن هذا الكتاب قد أثرى المكتبة العربية إذ جاء في وقت يكاد أن يكون مشابهًا لزمن الحرب الصليبية، وأنني أكاد أن أجزم أن النصر المملوكي على صليبي عكا لم يكن من الخارج بل سبقه انهيار داخلي.
وقد جاءت الدراسة مكونة من ستة فصول: (الفصل الأول: مشاكل توريث عرش المملكة، الفصل الثاني: التراجع الاقتصادي ودوره في انهيار المملكة، الفصل الثالث: الصراعات الداخلية وأثرها على انهيار المملكة، الفصل الرابع: مشكلات المجتمع في مملكة عكا الصليبية، الفصل الخامس: اعتماد مملكة عكا على أوربا، الفصل السادس: فشل مشروع التحالف الصليبي المغولي وصعود دولة المماليك البحرية) وخاتمة، بالإضافة إلى الخرائط والأشكال البيانية الملحقة بالدراسة.
