من أكثر الكتب إثارة من الناحية الفكرية حول بلاد فارس القديمة، وإضافة مهمة وكبيرة في حقل الدراسات الساسانية، من حيث هو ثورة معرفية في غاية الأهمية في ميدان البحث التاريخي الأكاديمي الجاد الرصين. فهو يعرض إجابة معاصرة وجريئة عن لغز ومعضلة قديمة في نظر المفكرين والمؤرخين عن سبب الانهيار السريع و«الكارثي» للإمبراطورية الساسانية التي بدت قوية وآمنة في القرن السابع الميلادي أمام جيوش الفاتحين العرب. فترى المؤلفة أن انهيار الإمبراطورية الذي يبدو في ظاهره مذهلًا ولا يمكن تفسيره، كان حتميًا بسبب تنافس أقطاب التحالف الساساني - الفرثي الفضفاض وتعرّضه لانشقاقات داخلية. لذا حالما تضعضع هذا التحالف، لم تصمد الإمبراطورية ذات الحكم اللامركزي أمام الجيوش العربية. علاوة على ذلك، تحاول المؤلفة بناء تسلسل جديد للأحداث تجاوزت فيه جميع المصادر السابقة التي تناولت التاريخ الساساني، وذلك من خلال عرضها خلاصة دراستها عددًا من المخطوطات والنقود المسكوكة والأختام، فضلًا عن نقدها بطريقة رصينة روايات الفتوح ومقابلتها بروايات كتاب خداى نامه؛ الأمر الذي يترتب عليه مضامين خطِرة على مجموعة من الحوادث المهمّة في تاريخ صدر الإسلام؛ منها أن حروب الردّة وفتح العراق حدثا في عهد الرسول محمَّد وليس بعد وفاته، ما سيجعل الباحثين، ولا سيَّما العرب، حذرين جدًا في دراستهم التاريخ الساساني من وجهة نظر المصادر العربية الإسلامية فحسب.
