تميز شعره بتناول شؤون الحياة اليومية دون اغفال القضايا الفلسفية التي تدور حول معنى الحياة والموت بأسلوب يمتاز بالبساطة الشديدة (وربما بالمباشرة التي تبدو خادعة في معظم الأحيان) وبالسخرية اللطيفة والصور الشعرية المدهشة الأصيلة، وقد خاض، مثله مثل العديد من الشعراء العلمانيين في اسرائيل صراعاً مع المؤسسة الدينية والفكر الديني السائد. كانت أشعاره مليئة بالاشارات الى الله والتجربة الدينية وأحداث ووقائع التاريخ والكتاب المقدس. فكان أن وصف بالشاعر-الفيلسوف الباحث عن المذهب الانساني الما بعد اللاهوتي، كما اتهمت بعض صوره بتجاوزها للمقدسات؛ ففي قصيدته "وهذا هو مجدك" على سبيل المثال يصور الله وقد تمدد تحت الكرة الارضية كما يتمدد الميكانيكي تحت سيارة، محاولاً أن يصلحها دون جدوى. أما في قصيدته "الآلهة تتغير، الإيمان يبقى كما هو" فيصور الله على صورة دليل سياحي أو ساحر.
يقول عميخاي متحدثاً عن تمكنه الذي عرف به من لغته "لقد ترعرعت في أسرة شديدة التدين فصارت الصلوات والأدعية ولغتها ضربا من اللغة الطبيعية بالنسبة لي. أنا لا أحاول –كما يفعل بعض الشعراء أحيانا- أن "أغني" قصائدي بإقحام المزيد من المواد الثقافية أو العرقية فيها، إنها تأتي بطريقة طبيعية تماما". أما أحد النقاد فقد وصف شعر عميخاي بأنه "لعبة أصوات" فهو يبني زخماً قوياً يتحرك في تداعٍ حر كلمة إثر أخرى، والأصوات في الواقع هي التي تخلق الكلمات التي تتوالى في سلسلة تركيبية تعتمد التقارب الصوتي" وهذا الأمر كما هو معروف –علاوة على غنى قصائده بالإحالات التراثية والدينية والفلسفية- يزيد من صعوبة ترجمة قصائده إلى لغات أخرى.
