ثمّة خطٌّ فاصل تاريخياً بين الأجساد «الجديرة بأن تكون محميّة»، وبين تلك التي تجرّد من السلاح ومن حقّها بالحماية وتترك عزلاء. هذا التجريد المنهجي من السلاح يعيد السؤال حول مسألة اللجوء إلى العنف دفاعاً عن النفس عند كل حركة تحررية. عام 1685، حظر «القانون الأسود» أن يحمل «العبيد أي سلاح هجومي أو عصا غليظة». وفي القرن التاسع عشر، منعت الدولة الاستعمارية السكانَ المحليين في الجزائر من حمل الأسلحة، فيما شرّعته للمستوطنين. أمّا اليوم، فحياة البعض باتت ضئيلة إلى حدّ يمكن فيه قتل مراهق بحجّة أنّه مصدر تهديد. تعيد إلزا دورلان إلى الذاكرة نشأة الدفاع السياسي عن النفس بوصفه ضرورة حيوية وصيرورة سياسية وإحدى ممارسات المقاومة. وتخلص إلى أن الأمر يتعلّق بإنتاج كائنات، كلما زادت قدرتها على الدفاع عن نفسها، عجّلت لقاءَ حتفها.
