في مجموعته الشعرية (ساقطاً على أقدامي لأول مرة) تنفتح الذات الشاعرة على حاضر الوطن، لترى كابوساً مرعباً يحيط بالذات العراقية الجمعية يعمل على إفنائها، يبدو ذلك جلياً في حضور الذات عبر ضمير الأنا في التعبير عن هذا الواقع وما به من خراب وجروحات " أنا الساقط من رحمٍ هالكةٍ/ الشرطي خلفي/ يفر رؤياه في أضلاعي/ والعراق السعيد يسألني:/ من أين أتيت لكل هذا الخراب؟/ أنا الساقط على أقدامي/ لأول مرة/ توهمت أني المسافر" هكذا يكتب الشاعر العراقي "أحمد مشتت" عن جرحه، يكتب كما لو أن الحرب التي أغرقت بلاده وأبعدته، جرح شخصي لكل عراقي يجلس حزيناً وغريباً، والأمر سيان داخل العراق أو خارجه. "رسائلنا/ فطنة متأخرة/ نكتبها دون انقطاع/ لتلهث معا في آخر حشرجة/ على حائط النسيان ...".
(ساقطاً على أقدامي لأول مرة) مجموعة لافتة، وقصائد حالمة، متشابكة مع الجراح، في انتظار أن تشرق شمس الصباح على عراق جديد... .
