رافق الصحافي هوبرت سايبل الرئيس فلادمير بوتين لفترة من حياته السياسية، ومن ثمّ اطلع منه على معظم تفاصيل نشأته، أهله، وعائلته، وصولاً إلى عمله في بلدية سانت بطرسبرجّ حيث أنقذ المدينة من أزمة إقتصادية مذلّة.
بعد فشل رئيس البلدية ومعه بوتين في الإنتخابات غادر مدينته التي أحبّها والتحق بالمخابرات السوفياتية السابقة حيث عمل لعدة سنوات متنقلاً بين النمسا وألمانيا، عندما شعر بقرب إنهيار الإتحاد السوفياتي إستقال من المخابرات وعاد إلى مدينته وعائلته في سانت بطرسبرج، سعى له صديق في العهد الجديد، فتسلّم وظيفة مساعد مدير الشؤون العقارية في الكرملين، وذلك في عهد بوريس آلتسين.
أعجب آلتسين بشخصية بوتين، عيّنه رئيساً للدائرة الإتحادية للأمن (FSB المخابرات الجديدة)، هنا استطاع أن يدرك الوضع الفاسد الذي ساد إثر إنهيار الإتحاد السوفياتي، توصّل إلى رئاسة الوزراء، ومن ثمّ إلى رئاسة روسيا كخلف لآلتسن لستة أشهر ومن ثمّ انتخب رئيساً في 26 آذار عام 2000 لأول مرّة.
أشار الصحافي سايبل إلى معاناة بوتين في بعض الأحداث والنزاعات العالمية البارزة، من القضية الأوكرانية إلى غرق الباخرة كورسك؛ ومن حرب العراق عام 2003 إلى إمتداد الحلف الأطلسي نحو الشرق، والحرب الروسيّة - الجورجية، وحرب الشيشان، وتحطّم الطائرة الماليزية MH17، يضاف إليها أزمات الربيع العربي، تونس، ليبيا، العراق، اليمن، ومن ثمّ سوريا...
أخيراً، أشار إلى مشاكله الداخلية: الأغنياء الجدد، والأوليغارك، وغيرها من التفاصيل المختلفة حول شخصية بوتين ونزاعاته مع زعماء الغرب، فأعاد اسم روسيا إلى الصدارة، وأصبح الشخصية العالمية بإمتياز في حقبة دخوله سوريا ووقوفه إلى جانب الرئيس الأسد.
