تدور أحداث هذه الرواية خلال خمس سنوات تقريبًا بداية من منتصف عام 1960 أو بالضبط بعد حدوث الانقلاب العسكري في تركيا في 27 مايو 1960، تقوم المؤلفة بعرض آرائها السياسية وتحليلها العميق لتلك الفترة العصيبة في تركيا خلال هذه الرواية بواسطة فتاة بريئة تنظر إلى العالم بعين الشباب الممتلئة بالحماس والطموح، ثم تصطدم بالواقع الفظيع المريع ولكنها تقاوم وتناهض بفضل أختها الكبرى وقدوتها ومرشدتها في هذه الحياة "آيبارا"... التي عانت كثيرًا بسبب شخصيتها المثقفة وآرائها التحررية في مجتمع جاهل، يقمع المرأة ويهمل دورها.
عرضت المؤلفة في ذلك العمل التفاصيل الدقيقة للحياة السياسية والاجتماعية في تلك الفترة بشكل بارع ورائع، وبأسلوب مثير وشيق، وبتحليل عميق للمواقف من وجهات نظر مختلفة عن طريق الشخصيات المتنوعة ذات الآراء المتباينة والأهداف المختلفة، التي ساقتها في الرواية.
