قامت الباحثة الاجتماعية كاتلين ريدون بدراسة حول الإقناع وأهميته، فأشارات إلى حقيقة اجتماعية، وهي أن الناس يعتمدون على بعضهم، ويتصرفون بالكيفية التي التوافق بينهم، فكل منهم عليه أن يجد الأساليب التي تجعل سلوكه المحقق لأهدافه مقبولاً من الآخرين، ذلك لأن أنماط الحياة تؤكد على أن الناس كائنات اجتماعية، فهم في حاجة إلى أن يكونوا في صحبة الآخرين، وأن يكونوا مقبولين منهم وهذه الحاجة التي يشعرون بها لا يمكن تحقيقها إذا جاء سلوكهم متعارضاً مع أهداف الآخرين، ويأتي الإقناع كأسلوب يحاول به الناس أن يغيروا سلوك الآخرين، فلكي تقنع مزارعين بسطاء باستخدام الأساليب التكنولوجية الحديثة في الزراعة لابد أن يشاهدوا النتائج أولاً، ولذلك يجب أن يستخدم هذه التكنولوجيا الميسورون وبعد ذلك يقتنع باقي الأفراد.
وأهمية الإقناع لا تقف عند هذا الحد بل إن الأمر يتعدى ذلك مجال التعليم والتربية، فالتعليم بعضه يقوم على التجارب والأرقام والأفكار والملاحظة، ولكل منها نتائج يجب أن تكون صحيحة وإلا أصبحت الرسالة التعليمية المقدمة غير مقنعة، فالعلوم الرياضية كالهندسة والجبر ونحوهما تقوم أساساً على مبدأ الإقناع والبرهان وكل ذلك يدل على أهميته في مجال التعليم وكذلك التربية، فالطفل لا يمكن أن يقتنع بخطر النار والمياه الساخنة إلا إذا شعر بها بنفسه، ولا يمكن أن يقتنع بأن الكذب غير محبوب وخلق سيئ إلا إذا شعر بها بنتائجه الوخيمة، والمراهق أيضاً لا يمكنه أن يدرك أضرار التدخين إلا بالمشاهدة، والأمر ينجر على سائر المجالات الأخرى التي يدخل فيها الإقناع كالدين بشكل رئيسي والإدارة، والعلاج النفسي، وأصبحت عمليات التطبيق في جميع المجالات تأخذ دوراً أكبر من أجل الإقناع.
