إن أهمية كتاب جيفري ارونسن تكمن في أنه يقدم الرواية الأمريكية للعلاقات بين واشنطن والقاهرة، أو بوجه أدق للسياسة الأمريكية تجاه مصر في العقد الذي أعقب الحرب العالمية الثانية مباشرة، أي من عام 1946 إلى عام 1956، وهو العقد الذي تداعت فيه الأحداث ليتوِّجها إنتقال السلطة إلى الضباط الأحرار.
وكانت السنوات 54- 56 هي السنوات التي لم تحسم فيها الثورة بعد موقفها من الولايات المتحدة، وهي بالتالي الفترة التي ما زال يكتنفها غموض وبخاصة في ما يتعلق بالدور الأمريكي في صنع أحداث تلك المرحلة الدقيقة.
ولذلك، كانت ترجمة الكتاب إلى العربية، بما يضمه من وثائق ومستندات هامة، إضافة للمكتبة العربية، وسدّا لنقص كان ينتظر الإستكمال، خصوصاً وأن الكثير من الوثائق الرسمية التي يستند إليها الكاتب لم تكن متاحة من قبل، وكُشِفت مؤخراً فقط، بعد رفع السرية عنها.
