إنه لمما لا شك فيه أن بصمات يونغ قد تركت آثارها العميقة في العلوم النفسانية وأدت إلى تغييرات هامة سواء على صعيد المعرفة النظرية أو على صعيد الأساليب العلاجية، وبفضلها اكتسبت نفسانية السلوك الإنساني دعامات جديدة لم تكن من قبل. لقد أنشأ يونغ في بلده سويسرا معهداً دولياً لعلم النفس التحليلي، وأنشئت في البلدان الأوروبية والأميركية أيضاً معاهد عديدة ومؤسسات علاجية تعلم نظرياته وتتبع منهجه. ولكن يبدو أن ضخامة الإنتاج واتساع أمدائه بالمقارنة مع غيره من النفسانيين قد كانت إلى حد ما وراء تأخر اطلاع الجماهير الواسعة على نظرياته ومناهجه العلاجية، وكان أن تصدى الكثيرون من مريدي يونغ لمؤلفاته فنسقوها وقدموا لها الشروح، ولعل ألمعهم شارل بودوان الذي نقلب صفحات كتابه.
وشارل بودوان هو أيضاً عالم نفساني مرموق ومؤسس "معهد دولي للتقويم النفسي". رافق يونغ في مراحل كثيرة وفي ندوات متكررة، وكان متتبعاً يقظاً لحياة الرجل وأفكاره وتجاربه. وهو في هذا الكتاب يعرض للقارئ مؤلفات يونغ جملة وتفصيلاً، موزعاً إياها تبعاً لمراحل حياة المؤلف ولتطور أفكاره، مقارناً فيما بينها، متتبعاً تطور المفهوم الواحد في كل منها، متقصياً كل ما توفر له من وثائق، حتى الأحاديث في المناسبات واللقاءات المرتجلة وأعياد الميلاد التي كانت تجمع حوله أصدقاء وعلماء من شتى أنحاء العالم، والخطابات البليغة التي قيلت يوم مأتمه، إضافة إلى أقوال العلماء الآخرين الناقدين لنظرياته.
