ليس الشطرنج شيئاً حديث العهد لقد فتن الشعوب منذ مئات السنين ومارسه أناس كثيرون كان الامبراطور نابليون احدهم، أين بدأت هذه اللعبة ومتي ؟.. لا يعرف ذلك أحد علي وجه التأكيد إنما الاعتقاد السائد الأن أن الشطرنج اخترع بالهند في القرن السادس وأنتقل منها الي اوربا الشرقية ومنها الي اوربا الغربية التي يحتمل أن يكون وصل إليها في القرن الحادي عشر والتعديلات التي أجريت علي مباديء اللعبة في القرن الخامس عشر هي التي قدمت لنا اللعبة في شكلها الحالي ولم يكن في الشطرنج في تاريخه الطويل من الشعبية ما له في زماننا الحاضر.
واللعبة أشبه بمعركة بين اسرتين ملكييتن تحاول كل منها القضاء علي ملك الاخري وهي تجري بين لاعبين اثنين فقط علي رقعة من 64 مربعاً اسود فأبيض بالتتالي وتوضع الرقعة بين اللاعبين بحيث يكون مربع الزاوية الأبيض دائماً علي يمين كل منهما ويلعب احدي اللاعبين بالقطع البيضاء والأخر بالقطع السوداء وتجري نقلات الطرفين بالتناوب ولا يحق في الشطرنج لأي من اللاعبين اهمال القيام بنقلته، قاعدة اخري مهمة تجدر الإشارة اليها وهي مبدأ اللعب باللمس فإذا لمس اللاعب قطعة ما وجب عليه أن ينقلها وتعتبر النقلة منتهية بعدما يترك اللاعب القطعة فوق المربع ويرفع يده عنها ولا يحق له بعدئذ تغيير رأيه بشأنها.
