يحدد مؤلف هذا الكتاب غايته من الإنخراط في الفلسفة بإعتقاده أنه بذلك سوف يساعد الآخرين على التفكير بشكل مثمر في وحول الثقافة التعبيرية السوداء، حيث يمكن لبعضهم أيضاً أن يكون السواد حقلاً رمزياً لإبراز هوياتهم، كما يمكن لبعضهم أيضاً أن يكون السواد مرتبطاً بأبعاد التجربة الإنسانية الفائقة الأهمية.
لقد كان السواد غرائبياً، مثيراً، خطيراً وشهوانياً.
إن قرب هذا الكتاب من التراثات السائدة في الفلسفة الأنغلوفونية المعاصرة، وبعده عن الأمزجة الملفوفة تقليدياً من قبل المقاربات الأخرى للثقافة التعبيرية السوداء؛ إن ذلك كان الدافع إلى مصالحة الجمالي الاسود مع نظرية العرق المعاصرة.
وهنا تضطرم الأسئلة عن علم الجمال وعلم السياسة، وبالتالي عن سياسة علم الجمال الأسود، وفي كل ذلك، وبعده، ينداح البحث عن التفسير إلى علم الأخلاق، كما ينداح في الإرتحالات المعرفية للموسيقى، وفي السينما والغناء.
يرى تايلور إن إضفاءات المعنى التي تؤلف (العرقنة)، تكون محصورة غالباً بالظاهرات الجمالية، أما القول بأن الممارسات الجمالية في الغرب الحديث هي بنى (معرقنة)، فهو ليس غير تسليط للضوء على دور التفكير العرقي في تشكيل حدود ومسارات تلك الممارسات، ولأنه يمكن للفلسفة أن تساعدنا في فهم ما يجري، يمكن لهذا الكتاب أن يزيل بعض الشوائب حول مفاهيم رئيسية مثل (علم الجمال) و(أسود)...
وبإختصار، نحن أمام كثر من الأفكار في هذا الكتاب، نحن أمام شهب فكرية لا تفتأ تتقد وتتهاطل ولا تنطفئ إلا لتنقد في حقل معرفي موّار وجديد في الثقافة العربية.
