ثمة زمرة من المثقفين الهيغليين الكبار كان من قدرهم أن غمطوا حقهم من جهة عناية الدارسين بمفكرهم وتثمير نظرياتهم، وبين شهرة فلسفة الأب الروحي النظرية-هيغل (1770-1831)، وشهرة فلسفة الابن الروحي العملية-ماركس (1818-1883)، بقي هؤلاء في طي الغمرة خاملي الذكر نكرة. لقد "أميت" هؤلاء يعملون الفكر في تواضع النظر وكان الواحد منهم يلهم، بدروسه العظيمة عن فينومينولوجيا الروح لهيغل (1933-1939)، أبرز ممثلي النخبة المثقفة الفرنسية التي أغنت أنظار الفكر الغربي ولا زالت تغني: أنظار جورج باتاي، وجاك لاكان، وجان فال، وريمون آرون... كانت للفلسفة الوجودية، بمختلف ألوان طيفها، أجراس وصولات ومريدون وأتباع، وثانيهما: أنه اليوم أيضاً، وفي زحمة احتفاء بعض دعاة الفكر الليبرالي المتطرف بما اسموه "نهاية التاريخ"، وذلك مع بدء عهد سيادة اقتصاد السوق بلا منازع، فإن القارئ العربي والغربي، على حد سواء، ألف أن يقرن بين هذه الدعوى الذائعة الصيت وبين اسم المفكر الأمريكي الياباني الأصل فرانسيس فوكوياما، معيداً قدر خمول الذكر الذي رافق هؤلاء المثقفين، مفوتاً عليه الفرصة، على إحقاق أصحابها ألصليين حقهما من العرفان. وحتى لا يموت هؤلاء المثقفون ميتة ثالثة، يجد القارئ في هذا الكتاب، محاولة للنظر في فكر اثنين منهما -ألكسندر كوجيف (1902-1968) وإريك فايل (1904-1977)- الذين نظرا في أمر "الحداثة" بأدق نظر، والذين تجرأ على إعلان "نهايتها"، بل "نهاية الفلسفة" و"نهاية التاريخ"، وذلك بما لم يجرؤ عليه أحد من قبلهما، وبما لم يدركه أحد من بعد غور بعدهما، وهو نظر لم يكتف فيه المؤلف بمجرد الوقوف على أنظار هذين المفكرين الهيغليين- الذين أسسا لأحد أعرق مدارس الفكر الفلسفي الحديث التي صارت تعرف اليوم باسم "المدرسة الهيغلية الفرنسية"- في شأن "الحداثة" بالوصف والتحقيق، وإنما تجاوز ذلك إلى محاولة "تأصيل" أنظارهما، بدءاً من "بسائط المفاهيم" التي استندا إليها، و"استشكال" أمر نظرهما في شأن "الحداثة" وذلك ليس بتتبع "ما فكرا فيه" ونظراً، وإنما أيضاً باستطلاع طلع "ما لم يفكرا فيه" وأعرضا: عنيناً ظاهرة "العدمية" -ذلك الضيف غير المحبوب الذي ما فتئ يهدد الحداثة أكبر تهديداً.
