تأتي أهمية ترجمة نشر هذا الكتاب وإتاحته لقراء العربية من أنه جاء في ظل لحظة تاريخية ملائمة تمامًا، وهي اندلاع انتفاضات الربيع العربي التي بدأت مع عام 2011، باعتبارها في النهاية صراع تخوضه الشعوب العربية نحو التقدم الاجتماعي والسياسي وقيم الحداثة والتحرر، فالكتاب يتحدث عن لحظة مشابهة إلى حد كبير في التاريخ الأمريكي، حيث انقسمت الولايات المتحدة التي تكون الاتحاد بين ولايات متقدمة في الشمال تقوم على العمل المأجور الحر، ومن ثم تنتمي للحداثة الرأسمالية الصناعية، وولايات متخلفة تقوم على العمل العبودي، ومن ثم تنتمي لما قبل الرأسمالية الصناعية، ويتناول الكتاب الصراع بين المعسكرين، الجمهوري الساعي لعتق العبيد ليتحولوا إلى عمالة حرة، والديمقراطي الساعي للإبقاء على واقع العبودية والتمييز العنصري، هذا الصراع الذي وصل لذروته في الحرب الأهلية الأمريكية، التي انتهت بانتصار الشمال وبعتق العبيد، ثم إعادة بناء النظام السياسي الاجتماعي الاقتصادي في الولايات المتحدة، شمالها وجنوبها، في الفترة التي تلت الحرب، والصراعات بين القوى السياسية المختلفة، الراديكالية والمعتدلة واليمينية، وكيف انتهت تجربة إعادة البناء في الجنوب لردة رجعية نحو نظام التمييز العنصري، ضد الأمريكيين الأفارقة، والذين كان عليهم أن ينتظروا قرنًا كاملًا حتى يزول تمامًا في ستينيات القرن العشرين بفضل حركة الحقوق المدنية.
