يعد هذا التفسير من التفاسير الهامة التي شرح فيها كتاب الله تعالى، وهو من التفاسير المتقدمة النافعة والبعض يعتبره أول تفسير كامل للقرآن الكريم لأن الصحابة كانوا متفاوتين في قدرتهم على تفسير القرآن تبعاً لمقدار سماعهم التفسير من الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم، ولمقدار ما شاهدوا من أسباب النزول ولمدى ما فتح الله به عليهم من طريق الرأي والاجتهاد.
هذا ويمتاز هذا التفسير بأنه قد جمع بين المأثور والمعقول، وببساطته وسهولته، وإحاطته التامة بمعاني الآيات ونظائرها في القرآن، وما يتعلق بها في السنة، واختلاط العقل بالنقل يظهر واضحاً في هذا التفسير إلى جانب هذا يمتاز زهد التفسير بجمعه لكافة الآيات المتصلة بموضوع واحد، فهو يورد الأحاديث المتعلقة بالآية بعد أن يحذف أسانيدها، ولذلك اختلط الصحيح بالعليل في هذا التفسير، وظهرن فيه إسرائيليات أهل الكتاب بصورة واضحة خصوصاً حول الأنبياء السابقين الذين عصم الله ظواهرهم وبواطنهم من التلبس بأمر منهى عنه.
وبالنظر للأهمية التي يحتلها هذا التفسير فقد اعتنى "أحمد فريد" بتحقيقه وبالتقديم له بمقدمة ضمنها ترجمة للمصنف والذي هو عالم من علماء التفسير وهو "مقاتل بن سليمان بن بشير البلخي مولى الأزد"، كما وضمنها نبذة عن الكتاب "تفسير مقاتل بن سليمان" ومميزاته الخاصة.
