تعتبر الفترة بين سنة 1793 وسنة 1818 مرحلة متميزة في تاريخ عمان الحديث بما دخل عليها من مذهب ديني جديد، مذهب أهل السلف، وما كان من سيطرة السعوديين فترة من الوقت على واحه البريمي، تلك السيطرة التي أثارت بعد ذلك كثيراً من قضايا الحدود في المنطقة بين كل من سلطة عمان وإمارة أبو ظبي من ناحية والمملكة العربية السعودية من ناحية أخرى.
ولم تنفرد دراسة تاريخية لأحوال عمان أواخر القرن الثامن عشر وأوائل القرن التاسع عشر والعلاقات التي قامت بينها وبين كل من حكومة بومباي البريطانية من ناحية وبين الدولة السعودية الأولى من ناحية أخرى.
فلازلنا نجهل الكثير من المعلومات العلمية عن هذا الركن العزيز من الوطن العربي. ومما يزيد في أهمية هذه الدراسة أن الحياة الاجتماعية في عمان والساحل قد تطورت خلال السنوات القليلة الماضية تطوراً سريعاً تحت تأثير الأوضاع الاقتصادية البترولية الجديدة.
ويشتمل هذا البحث على فصول ست. تناول الفصل الأول منها إقليم عمان من الناحية الجغرافية وخاصة الحياة الاجتماعية فيه. وفي الفصل الثاني درست الأحوال السياسية في إقليم عمان أواخر القرن الثامن عشر. وفي الفصل الثالث بحث عن الدولة السعودية الأولى قيامها وأفولها مع العناية بالعلاقات والصلات بين هذه الدول وإقليم عمان. أما الفصل الرابع فقد تناول النشاط البريطاني في منطقة الخليج وموقف حكومة بومباي من الدولة السعودية الأولى. وتناول الفصل الخامس موقف عمان من حملات السعوديين بشيء من الدراسة والتحليل. وجاء الفصل السادس يعرض الحملات البريطانية ضد القواسم الموحدين في رأس الخيمة وساحل عمان وضد قبيلة بني بو علي التي اعتنقت المذهب السلفي في صور وأرض جعلان، هذا بالإضافة إلى ملاحق الكتاب وفيها اتفاقية 12 اكتوبر 1798، واتفاقية 18 يناير1800، اتفاقية 6 فبراير 1806، الاتفاقية العامة بين إمارات الخليج العربي وحكومة بومباي سنة 1820- والجزء الثاني المحتوي على ملحق الخرائط وأشجار النسب.
