ويختص الكتاب بعصر ملك إسباني عنيد وهو فرناندو الثالث ملك قشتالة وليون، قابله حكم إسلامي هزيل، تمثل في نهاية حكم الموحدين في الأندلس، وتعود أهمية فرناندو الثالث إلى كونه أسقط قلب الأندلس فنقله من حيازة المسلمين وسلطانهم إلى سيطرة الإسبان ونفوذهم، فأسقط كلًا من قرطبة، مرسية، جيان، منتهيًا بمدينة إشبيلية، ليرنو ببصره إلى ما بعدها، إلا أن الموت كان أقرب إليه من غرناطة الإسلامية، التي بقيت بمفردها تصارع البقاء وتنتظر مصيرها المحتوم.
والكتاب دراسة متخصصة في طبيعة العلاقة بين المسلمين والإسبان في الأندلس في القرن الثالث عشر الميلادي السابع الهجري، والتي يشوبها العداء والتقاتل غالبًا وتقطعها المصالحة والتهادن قليلًا. وهنا برز دور حكام المسلمين والذين كانوا بين مهادن ومقصر وبائع للأرض مقابل سلطان زائف فضاعت الأرض وضاع معها السلطان... فما أشبه اليوم بالبارحة وحكام الأمس بأمثالهم من اليوم.
فضاعت بالأمس أندلس ... كما ضاعت منا فلسطين
