لقد اعتبر القدماء كلاً من المنطق والجدلية مفهومين مترادفين، على الرغم من أنّ "التفكير"، "التقييم"، "الحساب"، و"الجدال" كلها تجعل من المفهومين على إختلاف شديد، حيث أن مصطلح الجدلية، حسب ديوجين لايرسي، استُخدِم بداية من قبل أفلاطون، حيث يمكننا أن نلاحظ في مسرحية فيدر، السفسطائي، وكتاب الجمهورية السابعة أن القصد من الجدلية هو الدلالة على الإستعمال المنتظم للعقل وتطور الملكات في ممارسة هذا الإستخدام.
كما استخدم أرسطو أيضاً مصطلح "الديالكتيكا" في السياق ذاته، لكن، وبحسب لورنزو فالا.
فقد كان أول من استخدم مصطلح "المنطق" مقروناً بالتعريف نفسه: ونجد أيضاً في كتابه تعبير "منطق الصعوبة"، وهو يعني الجدال، سؤال منطقي، أو طرح منطقي.
وهكذا ستكون "الديالكتيكا" أكثر قدماً من "المنطق"، ثم استخدم كل من سيسيرون وكينتيليانوس المصطلحين عينهما في إطار المعنى العام ذاته.
وهكذا وفقاً لسيسيرون في عمله الأكاديمي لوكولوس: فإن الديالكتيك أو الجدلية هي من يكشف جوهر الأشياء، بما يشبه الحكم بين الحق والباطل.
