تهدف القراءة فى التربية المعاصرة إلى توثيق الصلة بين الطفل والكتاب لينهل منه المعلومات والأفكار التى تنمى قدراته وتجعله يستفيد أو يستمتع بما يقرأ. كما يرى التربويون والمعلمون أن النمو فى تعليم القراءة يجب أن يكون نموًا سليماً وحقيقيًا، ولا يهمهم أن يكون هذا النمو سريعًا، لأن السرعة فى النمو ليست دليلاً على التقدم فى تعليم القراءة، وأن القراءة لها أهداف ووظائف اجتماعية بالإضافة إلى وظائفها التعليمية والثقافية حيث أنها عملية اجتماعية فى حد ذاتها، وإن كانت فردية فى أدائها كما تقوم بتربية المجتمعات وفقًا لتراثها، أن التراث الحضارى لكل أمة يشكل أساس بنائها الحضارى، كما أنها تقوم أفراد المجتمع لمعرفة مقتضيات عصرهم الذى يعيشونه، ويعرفون بذلك ما لهم من حقوق، وما عليهم من واجبات، كما أنها وسيلة للمجتمع فى تعديل قيمه ومثله، وعاداته، وتجديد تراثه وتنقيته من كل ما يشوبه، وبذلك تعتبر للقراءة أهمية كبيرة فى حياة الناس، فأهميتها لا تبعد كثيرًا عن أهدافها ووظائفها، بل قد تكون متداخلة فيها كما أن لها أهمية تربوية وسياسية وفكرية.
ويتناول هذا الكتاب، مفهوم وأهداف القراءة، مستويات ومبادئ القراءة، أنواع ومهارات القراءة، تنمية الميول للقراءة عند الأطفال، مزايا ومعوقات القراءة، دور المؤسسات التربوية في تنمية القراءة .
