اكتسب التطور العلمي في نهاية القرن العشرين درجة كبيرة من الأهمية بإحلال التقنيات الحديثة محل القديمة. وفي هذا الاتجاه برزت أهمية تقنيات زراعة الأنسجة النباتية كطريقة بديلة للطرق التقليدية في الإكثار والتحسين الوراثي للنباتات بمختلف أنواعها.
ونظرًا لأهمية تقنيات زراعة الأنسجة النباتية في الإكثار الخضري للنباتات صعبة الإكثار مثل النخيل وخاصة الأصناف عالية الجودة، وضع هذا الكتاب ليكون عونًا لكافة المهتمين في هذا المجال. ففي بداية الكتاب أعطينا فكرة عامة عن شجرة النخيل وطرق الإكثار التقليدية مع إظهار مزايا وعيوب كل طريقة. كما تم إعطاء فكرة شاملة عن المبادئ العامة لزراعة الأنسجة النباتية.
وقد تم استعراض فيما بعد طرق إكثار النخيل بالأنسجة المختلفة (الأجنة، التبرعم، الأجزاء الزهرية). وشرحت بالتفصيل المراحل المختلفة لكل طريقة على حدى، والعوامل المؤثرة على نجاح الإكثار. وقد زود الكتاب بأمثلة عملية. وتم كتابة فصل مستقل عن المعوقات التي تعترض إكثار النخيل بالأنسجة، واقترحت بعض الحلول لبعض منها. وقد تم كتابة فصل مستقل عن الثبات الوراثي للنباتات الناتجة بالأنسجة، ومدى الحكم على تشابهها الوراثي مع النبات الأم.
وأعطيت فكرة واضحة وشاملة على مدى صلاحية نباتات الأنسجة التي نمت ووصلت إلى مرحلة الإزهار والإثمار في الحقل، وأخيرًا أعطيت فكرة موجزة عن أهمية وكيفية حفظ الأنسجة النباتية بالتجميد، والطرق المتبعة في ذلك. وفي الختام أتقدم بهذا العمل المتواضع إلى جميع المهتمين من طلاب، ومهندسين، وباحثين، ومنتجين في هذا المجال.
