وكان المفكر الإنكليزي توماس هوبز، صاحب اللوياثان، قد استخدمه عنواناً لكتابه الآخر، وفي حين يشير اللوياثان إلى وحش الدولة المقيّد، يدل البهيموت على وحش الدولة المتفلت من كل قيد... وما يطرحه نويمان هنا هو أن التنظيم النازي للمجتمع ينطوي على تدمير الأفكار التقليدية عن الدولة والأيديولوجيا والقانون، بل على تدمير أي عقلانية يقوم عليها ذلك كله.
