يمثل الحلقة المفقودة في المذهب الأشعري، فيغطي مرحلة مهمة من مراحل البحث الكلامي عند الأشاعرة ويكشف عن تفاصيلها، تلك المرحلة التي تمثل نضج المذهب واستواءه على سوقه بعد أن أرسى قواعده الأشعري وأسس بنيانه الباقلاني فانتشر على يده انتشارًا كبيرًا، ثم انتقل المذهب – بعد طبقتين من الأصحاب – إلى الجويني الذي يعد منظِّر المذهب، فيمثل الكتاب الحلقة التي من خلالها اتصل سند الأشاعرة حتى وصل إلى فخر الدين الرازي أحد أهم شخصيات المذهب الأشعري من المتأخرين. وقد توسع المؤلف في بسط استدلالات أصحاب المقولات في المسائل والدلائل فتتبع الأقوال والمذاهب في كل مسألة – لا سيما مقولات المعتزلة – مع ذكر أدلة كل قول، ووجه الدلالة فيه، وما قد يرد عليه من إيرادات، كل هذا مع التحري ومحاولة الاستقصاء، وصولًا إلى القول الحق في رأيه خالصًا من شائبة التتبع أو الاستدراك. وقد أعان المؤلفَ في ذلك اعتماده على مصادر للفكر الكلامي الأشعري وغيره مما أكثره في دنيا الناس اليوم في عداد المفقود. وقد استغرق الكتاب كافة المسائل الكلامية التي هي موضوعه إضافة إلى مناقشته مباحثَ وقواعدَ أصولية ومباحثَ حديثية وإشاراتٍ تفسيريةً ومباحثَ فقهيةً ولغوية.
