لما كان طريق معرفة سنة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم النقل والرواية، وجب أن يكون السبيل إلى معرفة صحتهما محفوظاً أيضاً، ولهذا اختار الله عز وجل رجالاً جعلهم حفظة الدين وخزنته، وأوعية العلم وحملته، أمعنوا في الحفظ، وأكثروا الكتابة، حتى إن أحدهم لو سئل عن عدد الأحرف في السنن لعدها عداً، وهذا الكتاب نموذج من نماذج السابقين. وكان من بين أولئك الرجال الشيخ محمد بن أحمد السفاريني، فقد بذل جهده في تنقيح وتوضيح كتاب ((عمدة الأحكام))، لابن قدامة المقدسي، فجاء شرحه غاية في الجمال، فمن تأمله بإنصاف ظهر له أنه فريد في بابه، فإن شاء المطالع تناول منه أحاديث نبوية، وإن شاء اقتبس منه أحكاما فقهية وآدابا شرعية، وإن شاء معرفة أخبار الصحابة وغيرهم ظفر فيه بشذرة علية، وإن شاء تقويم لغته وجد فيه جملة من المواد اللغوية، وإن شاء الوقوف على كلام العلماء وجده مجموعا في حلة ذهبية. ولقد بذل المحقق جهداً كبيراً في خدمة هذا السفر القيم، حيث قسم عمله إلى قسمين: القسم الأول جاء فيه بترجمة مفصلة للمؤلف. والثاني قام فيه بدراسة الكتاب دراسة عميقة، بيَّن فيها نسبةَ الكتاب إلى مؤلفه، ومنهجَ المؤلف والمواردَ التي اعتمد عليها في كتابه، وذكَرَ منزلة الكتاب العلمية ووصَفَ النسخ الخطية المعتمدة في التحقيق. ثم أتبعها بالحديث عن ((كشف اللثام)) مبيّناً سبب تأليف الكتاب، كما ترجم للإمام أحمد، وابن قدامة ترجمة وافية. كما قام بتخريج أحاديث الشرح والمتن والآثار الواردة فيه، وعزو الآيات إلى مواضعها من القرآن الكريم، وتوثيق تراجم الصحابة، وما يذكره المؤلف من غريب اللغة، وعزو الأقوال إلى أصحابها، وتخريج الأبيات الشعرية وذكر أوزانها، وترجمة بعض الأعلام غير المشهورين، ثم ختم العمل بفهارس علمية تزيد من قيمة الكتاب العلمية. ينصح به: كل طالب فقه وعلم، وباغٍ للخير، فالخير كل الخير في الفقه في الدين.
