شخصية أبي حيان التوحيدي - توفى عام 414هـ - شخصية جدلية، وقد تضاربت الأقوال في اعتقاده ومنهجه - بل وحتى في لقبه "التوحيدي" هل هو نسبة لنوع تمر أو هو للتوحيد الذي عند المعتزلة وحقيقته: نفى صفات الله تعالى - فمن قائل فيه إنه زنديق ضال ملحد، ومن قائل إنه كان صحيح العقيدة وليس عنده ما يوجب الوقيعة فيه.
وكتابه "البصائر والذخائر" يحتوي على قطع أدبية مسموعة ومنقولة، وقد أثنى عليه ابن النجار - كما سبق ذكر كلامه-، وفيه أشياء فائقة البلاغة، حسنة المعنى جداً. ووقفنا فيه على نقد شديد لأهل الكلام في دينهم وسلوكهم وتعبدهم.
