إن من أشرف العلوم وأجلِّها بعد علم الكتاب.. هو علم الحديث الشريف؛ فأهله هم خلفاء النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، دعا لهم بالرحمة والنضارة، وبشَّرهم بالجنة وهي أغلى بشارة، فاشتغلوا ليل نهار، وأفنوا الأعمار لتدوين الأسفار، فأبدعوا في تآليفهم، وتفنَّنوا في تصانيفهم. ولقد تعدَّدت جهود العلماء للحفاظ على هذه الشريعة محكمةً واضحةً مبينة، فدوَّنوا السنة الشريفة، واعتنوا بعلم الجرح والتعديل، وبذلوا الجهود في تآليف لضبط أسماء الرواة؛ فمنهم: من ألَّف في ضبط المتشابه لكل اسمٍ عُرف بالرواية، ومنهم: مَن صنَّف لرواةٍ في كتبٍ حديثيةٍ محصورة أو كتابٍ بعينه؛ وهو علم نبيل، اتفق العلماء على استحسانه، وحثُّوا على إتقانه، قال ابن الصلاح رحمه الله تعالى: (هذا فنٌّ جليل، من لم يعرفه من المحدِّثين.. كَثُر عِثارُه، ولم يَعْدَمْ مُخْجِلاً، وهو منتشر...). ولقد كثرت التآليف في هذا الفن، وفي مقدمتها كتب الحافظ الدارقطني وأبي علي الغساني، والقاضي عياض والسمعاني، وابن ماكولا وعبد الغني الأزدي، والذهبي وابن ناصر الدين الدمشقي، وابن حجر العسقلاني وغيرهم رحمهم الله تعالى. وإن ممَّن ضرب مع العلماء بسهمٍ علامة اليمن، الحافظ الفقيه محمد بن أبي بكر الأشخر اليمني الشافعي؛ حيث أفرد الكلام في منظومة رجزية بديعة لضبط أسماء رجال «الصحيحين»، فغدت منظومته هذه تحفة رائعة في سبكها، سهلة في تناولها، ميسرة واضحة لا حشو فيها. ولم يقف النظم عائقاً عن البيان، وهذا شأن أهل الرسوخ والعرفان، فكشف عن متشابه الأسماء، وضبط المشكل والكنى والألقاب وما يتعلَّق بذلك. وأتحفنا المحقق بتعليقاته وإيضاحاته، فغدا هذا السِّفْر النفيس على وجازته منارة يضيئ طريق السالك إلى «الصحيحين»، يكشف الوهم، ويزيل اللبس، ويضبط المشكل من الأسامي.
