يتناول القسم الأول من هذا الكتاب بعض النظريات والمناهج الحديثة، ويحاول الكشف عن بعض عيوبها، برغم ما أحيطت به من هالات وما أصبح لها من سطوة وتأثير في الأوساط الثقافية والأدبية.
فتأريخ المعرفة ينبئنا، كما يقول المؤلف، بأن الفلسفات والنظريات والمناهج، منذ الإغريق حتى اليوم، هي فلسفات ونظريات ومناهج نسبية، لها إرتباط وثيق بالمكان والزمان وبتأريخ المعرفة وتطورها.
ونسبيتها هذه تنفي عنها عصمتها، وتضعها، منذ لحظة ولادتها، موضع المساءلة والشك والنقد، حتى تتكشّف تناقضاتها وعيوبها ونواقصها، فتتفكك، وتتنحى قليلاً أو كثيراً، لتخلي المكان، كله أو بعضه، لفلسفات ونظريات ومناهج عديدة، وعليه فلا قدسية لنظرية، ولا عصمة لمنهج.
أما القسم الثاني من الكتاب فيتعرض لظواهر وقضايا أدبية شتّى، خاصة وعامة، ويحاول إستجلاءها وتقديم تصوّر المؤلف عنها.
وأما القسم الثالث فهو قراءات نقديّة في متون كتب متنوعة، فكريّة وأدبية، والكشف عن مزاياها وعيوبها، وبهذا يكون الكتاب جولة نقديّة في آفاق رحبة من الأدب والمعرفة.
