تعتبر الصحة النفسية للأطفال عموماً ذات أهمية بالغة في أيَّة مجتمع من المجتمعات، ولعل السبب وراء هذه الأهمية آثارها ذات الدلالة على سلوكهم التكيّفي اليومي، وأدائهم الأكاديمي، ونوعية حياتهم المستقبلية.
وقد أشارت العديد من الدراسات إلى أنّ العجز في المهارات الإجتماعية والإنفعالية لدى الأطفال ذوي الإحتياجات الخاصة أو أقرانهم العاديين يحدُّ من فرصهم التعليمية وتفاعلهم مع أقرانهم، وفي أغلب الحالات يؤثر على مدى تكيفهم النفسي كمراهقين، وراشدين وقد أشارت العديد من الدراسات إلى وجود علاقة سلبية ما بين المشكلات السلوكية والإنفعالية والتحصيل الأكاديمي، ولا تقتصر آثار الحالة الإنفعالية على الأطفال أنفسهم، بل تتعداها لتؤثر على أفراد الأسرة والمجتمع.
وتزداد أهمية الإهتمام في المشكلات السلوكية والإنفعالية؛ تأكيد العديد من الدراسات على أنّ عدداً كبيراً من الأطفال يعانون من مشكلات إنفعالية وسلوكية عبر مراحلهم النمائية المختلفة، فقد أشار باركمان Barkman وشولت - ماركوارت Markwot- Schulte عام (2005) إلى أن متوسط نسبة شيوع المشكلات الإنفعالية، والسلوكية بلغت 15.8%؛ وذلك بالإستناد على نتائج (52) دراسة رئيسية أجريت في العديد من دول العالم.
