طبيب سويدي متميز يسرد في روايته هذه لمحات مكثفة من حياته ودراسته في باريس وعمله في علاج الأمراض العصبية ومتاعبها، بين فرنسا وإيطاليا.
كان محباً للحيوانات، ونزعته الإنسانية هذه جعلت حتى بعض الوحوش تأنّس له، وعلى مقربة من دارته التي بناها بيديه في جزيرة كابري، أنشأ محمية للطوير المهاجرة لينقذها من جشع التجار.
وكان على معرفة بأعلام الادب والطب في فرنسا، ومنهم الطبيب الشهير شاركو - مستخدم التنويم المغناطيسي في العلاج، إلا أنه اختلف معه بسبب المآسي الفظيعة التي شاهدها نتجت عن ذلك العلاج؛ وهو يصوّر الأحوال المزرية في قاع المدينة ومآسي الفقراء وتجارة البغاء وضحاياها في باريس، كما يتحدث بمرارة عن ضحايا الحرب العالمية والملاريا في نابولي، ولعل رحلته إلى بلاد اللاب، في أقصى الشمال، من أطرف الفصول.
إنها تجربة إنسانية غنية وحافلة بالغرائب والآلام، بقدر ما فيها من مخاطر وأهوال ومفارقات، جارحة حيناً ومضحكة أحياناً.
كتب إكسل مونتي (1949- 1857) روايته هذه بتشجيع من صديقه هنري جيمس، وقد حظيت بشهرة واسعة وطُبعت عدة مرات، وفي مقدمة الطبعة الأولى سنة 1929، يشير إلى أهمية الكتابة لأنها تساعد الإنسان على أن يتخلص من تعاسته، كما أنها عزاء لمن لا يستطيع أن ينام!...
