يسعى هذا الكتاب المميَّز إلى تقديم إجابات عن هذه الأسئلة المهمّة من أجل فَهْم العالَم المُعاصِر والإنزياح الجاري للمركزيّة الغربيّة.
ولا يَرسم الكِتاب خريطة الأفكار التي تكوَّنت في مرحلة ما بعد الإستعمار فحسب، وإنّما يُحيط سوسيولوجيّاً بأبرز مُفكّري هذه الحقبة، مُبَيِّناً تأثير المنفى بشكلٍ خاصّ على نِتاجهم الفكريّ.
هكذا، ينطلق إنزياح المركزيّة الغربيّة من فرضيّة "الإنتقال" بين عالَمَين، في فَهْم تشكُّل الفكر ما بعد الكولونيالي وتكوّنه؛ إذ يعيش مثقّفو ما بعد الكولونياليّة الغربة لدى إنتقالهم إلى الغرب، كما يعيشونها في علاقاتهم المُستجدّة بمجتمعاتهم الأصليّة، وهذا الموقف بالضبط سَمح لهم برؤية أشكال السلطة العالَميّة بتلاوينها المُختلفة والتفكُّر فيها تفكيراً خلّاقاً.
هكذا يسعى توماس بريسّون، من خلال تتبُّع عمليّات إنتقال المثقَّفين الهنود والعرب والصينيّين بَين العوالِم الإمبراطوريّة السابقة والغرب، إلى الكشف عن مَنطق المَسارات الفكريّة العالَميّة وأشكال نقد الغرب المتمثّلة بالمثقَّفين الهنود والعرب الذين أطلقوا "دراسات ما بعد الكولونياليّة"، وبنظرائهم الصينيّين أصحاب مشروع "الكونفوشيوسيّة الجديدة".
وكان للمؤلِّف بذلك أن بيَّن آليّة تبلْور النقد بوصفه فنّ التمايُز عمّا يتراءى لنا أمراً بديهيّاً.
