هذا الكتاب هو مساهمة أساسية في تاريخ الحركة الوطنية الكردية، وأكراد سوريا لسنوات 1920-1940، يحلل الكاتب من خلاله عملية تكوين ما يسمى «كردستان سوريا»، ويُظهر كيف أنَّ التناقضات السياسية للانتداب الفرنسي مكّنت القادة الأكراد ـ ذوي الأصول الكردية ـ من فرض أنفسهم كوجهاء «مجتمعين» ومهندسين «للفضاءات السياسية الصغيرة».
هكذا، وبتقاطعٍ ما بين التقليد العثماني والنمط «الشمال ـ افريقي» في الأراضي السورية، أطلق الانتداب الفرنسي ديناميات مقبولة بشكل جزئي، ولكنها ليست بالضرورة مسيطراً عليها…
لقد ارتكز هذا البحث على الأرشيف الدبلوماسي، العسكري والخاص، وكذلك على دراسات متخصصة، وأبحاث وكتابات تعود إلى ذلك العصر. وقد استحضر الكاتب الكثير من المعلومات المتنوعة والأصلية، خصوصاً عن الحركة الثقافية والفكرية المتمحورة حول khyboun وعلاقاتها مع الباحثين ـ الفرنسيين المختصين في الشؤون الكردية، كما مع إيران، والنّخب الكردية الإيرانية والطاشناق الأرمني.
يغذّي الكتاب أيضاً تحليلات متميزة ومعقدة وأحياناً متناقضة، حول المفاصل "المؤشكلة" ما بين الهويات القبلية (العشائرية)، المحلية والمناطقية والوطنية وولادة الوعي الأقلوي الكردي في مواجهة تصلّب القومية العربية في سوريا المنتدبة.
