"ماكس هافلار" روايةٌ سِيَرية ساخرة يوثق فيها إدوَرد داوِس دِكَر معاناته الشخصية خلال عمله بصفة مساعد مقيم في ليباك في جاوا التي كانت في تلك الأثناء مستعمرةً هولنديةً...
وقد اتخذ دِكَر لنفسه اسماً أدبيّاً هو مُلتاتولي ليعبر عن مكابدته ومرارته، حيث إن هذا الإسم يعني باللاتينية "لقد تَحَمَّلْتُ كثيراً". كان دِكَر يأمل أن يُعرَض عليه منصبٌ في إدارة المستعمرات يُعيد إليه إعتباره ويؤدي إلى تحسين وضع الجاويين، لكن حين رفض وزير المستعمرات الهولندي أن يعينه من جديد في إندونيسيا، كان لا بد من نشر الكتاب، وحين نُشرت الرواية سنة 1860 أحدثت جدالاً سياسياً وإجتماعياً هائلاً، حيث إنتابت جسدَ الأمة الهولندية "قشعريرةٌ" من جَرّائها، وأدت في نهاية الأمر إلى إصلاحاتٍ كثيرةٍ.
تُروى أحداث الرواية من منظورين متنافرين: في البداية نلتقي بمسمار القهوة الأمستردامي دروخستوبل الذي تستحوذ تجارة القهوة على كل تفكيره وأفعاله، ويدّعى أنه مخلص لعمله والحقيقة، لكنه في الواقع شخصية كاريكاتيرية.
وتتضح سخرية المؤلف منه من خلال إعطائه اسم بَتافوس دروخستويل الذي يعني "الهولندي المتحذلق" (باللاتينية والهولندية على التوالي).
وحين يلتقي دروخستوبل بزميل دراسته القديم ماكس هافلار، وقد عاد للتو من جاوا فقيراً مُعدماً، نطالع منظوراً مختلفاً للأحداث.
هذا المنظور نكتشفه في المخطوطة التي يطلب هافلار من دروخستوبل أن يساعده على نشرها، والمخطوطة، التي تُكذِّب رؤية دروخستوبل السطحية للأحداث، تروي قصة حياةً شابٍّ مثالي يعمل في السلك المدني في الإدارة الإستعمارية الهولندية في جاوا وهو يحاول حماية الفقراء والمستضعفين الجاويين، من جور الزعماء المحليين والحكومة الإستعمارية الهولندية، فلا يُفلِح إلا في دفع الإدارة إلى إقالته.
