من النادر أن نجد عنصراً نسوياً بين الرحالين الغربيين إلى العالم العربي مشرقاً ومغرباً، وإذا ما استثنينا بضعة أسماء من الغربيات اللواتي توجهن إلى المشرق العربي، لا سيما البريطانيات ممن زرن الشرق في القرن التاسع عشر، فإن اللواتي ظهرن في المغرب كن غالباً من الأسيرات، ومن كتبن شهادات عن أسرهن هن ندرة نادرة.
من بين هؤلاء صاحبة هذه المذكرات الهولندية مارية تير ميتلن Maria Ter Meetelen، التي وقعت أسيرة على يد القراصنة المغاربة، وتركت لنا نصاً رحلياً هاماً عن الحياة اليومية في مغرب أواسط القرن الثامن عشر، وما عرفته السنوات التي قضتها هناك من أحداث سياسية وإقتصادية وإجتماعية متقلبة وصادمة.
يتميز النص بلغة تمزج بين الرحلة والسيرة الذاتية، روت فيه الكاتبة قصة أسْرها، وما حفلت به من وقائع مؤلمة وأخرى طريفة، وعلى الرغم من اللغة التقريرية التي ميزت الكتابة عند ماريا تير ميتلن، فإن طريقة سردها للأحداث طبعت روايتها بطابع تشويقي مغامراتي مليء بالمفاجآت، ومنحت النص فتنة آسرة للقارئ.
