يتحرّى هذا الكتاب التاريخ الاجتماعي والسياسي والديني لأواخر القرون الوسطى، بين العهد المغولي والعهد الصفوي، في كل من إيران والعراق والأناضول. وهي فترة شديدة الاضطراب والغموض، في بقعة تداخلت فيها أقوام وتداولتها دول وإمبراطوريات. ويكشف في هذا السياق، أول مرّة في بعض الجوانب، كيف تطورت طريقة الشيخ صفي الدين الأردبيلي الصوفيّة إلى حركة شيعيّة غدت شيئًا فشيئًا قوةً مسيطرةً في المنطقة.
لكنّ أهمية الكتاب لا تتوقف عند هذا، بل تتعدّاه إلى منهجية البحث اللافتة، وإلى أنَّ الحقبة التي يتناولها كانت صلة الوصل الحاسمة في العالم الإسلامي بين أواخر العصور الوسطى وأوائل العصر الحديث، ويُعَدّ فهمها وتقويم مشكلاتها السياسية الدينية أمرًا حيويًا في فهم الشروط الاجتماعية في الشرق الأوسط آنذاك، كما في فهم تورّطه في صراعٍ متنامٍ من أجل البقاء مع الدول القومية الناشئة في أوروبا، ما أدّى في آخر الأمر إلى إضعاف القوى الأوروبية المنطقةَ بأكملها سياسيًا وإخضاعها نهائيًا.
