تعدّ رواية (طيران ليليّ) واحدةً من كلاسيكيّات الرواية الفرنسيَّة في القرن العشرين، وواحدةً من أهمّ أعمال أنطوان دو سانت إكزوبيري، وقد ضمنت لمؤلفها فور صدورها، سنة 1931، بتقديم من أندريه جيد، مكاناً بارزاً إلى جانب أهمّ كتّاب جيله مثل مالرو وكامو.
حظيت الرواية بنجاح كبير لم ينل منه تعاقب السنين، إذ بيع منها ما يزيد عن ستّة ملايين نسخة عبر العالم.
يطرح صاحب (الأمير الصغير)، في روايته هذه السؤال الجوهريّ: ما الّذي يفوق حياةَ الإنسان قيمة، ويستحقّ أن يضحَى بها من أجله؟ ويصوّر بلغته الشاعريّة وسرده الذكيّ ذي النبرة الملحميّة كفاح الإنسان من أجل تجاوز نفسه بحثاً عن المعنى، عبر مغامرة التحليق ليلاً في بدايات الطيران التجاريّ الأولى، مطلعَ القرن العشرين.
ولعل أهميّة الرواية تكمن في ما شدّد عليه "أندريه جيد" في مقدّمته: "ما يعجبني على وجه الخصوص، في هذه القصّة المؤثّرة، هو نبلها، فنحن نعرف أكثر مّما ينبغي حالات الضعف والخذلان، وسقوط الإنسان، والأدب في أيّامنا ماهر للغاية في كشفها، لكنّ تجاوز الذات، الّذي تنجح فيه الإرادة الطموحة، هو ما نحتاج تحديداً أن يصوّر لنا".
