وذات صباح، ذهبت "نور" إلى زوجها "سالم" في مكتبه على الرغم من التحذيرات الشديدة والمستمرة لها بعدم الذهاب إليه في عمله لأي سبب من الأسباب، لعلمه بمدى صفاقة ودونية مخدومه اللعين قاسم بك، ولكنها مشيئة القدر التي لا مفر منها.
لمح قاسم بك عند دخوله مكتبه هذه السيدة شديدة الجمال ممشوقة القوام، وكان من الطبيعي أن يسأل عنها البك، الذي شغل منصب وزير المالية مؤخراً، فهو رجل عيناه زائغتان طوال الوقت، وشهوته الحيوانية لا تنطفئ أبداً رغم تجاوزه الأربعين بقليل، على حد تعبير الإخشيدي نفسه.
وكما توقع سالم، طلب قاسم بك منه أن تكون زوجته "نور" ضيفته القادمة في مضجعه بفيلا الزمالك، ولم يفوته أن يطلب منه أيضاً تذكير حرمه المصون بضرورة ارتداء "القميص الأحمر" الذي يحب أن يرى فيه عشيقته في الليلة الأولى.
