ولد في 11 أكتوبر 1885 من أسرة فرنسية جلّ أفرادها من العلماء والأدباء. اتجه لدراسة الطب أولا، ثم انصرف عنها نهائياً ليتجه إلى الأدب والصحافة مكرساً لهما حياته اللاحقة كلها.
نشر أولى رواياته عام 1922 بعنوان"قبلة للأبرص"، وفيها بدا واضحاً اهتمامه بالتجديد الفني واستخدام الأساليب المستحدثة في الكتابة الروائية عام 1928، نشر روايته المعروفة"المكروهون" مصوراً فيها حياة فرنسا في عشرينيات هذا القرن، من وجهة نظر ناقدة اختلط فيها السخط والتشاؤم أيضاً. أول ترجمة عربية لروايته "عقدة الأفاعي" صدرت في القاهرة عام 1947 بإشراف الدكتور طه حسين.
كان الكاتب عضواً في الأكاديمية الفرنسية منذ عام 1933، وشغل منصب وزير الثقافة الفرنسية أيام رئاسة الجنرال ديغول.
له قرابة 30 مؤلف وعدة مسرحيات، فاز بجائزة نوبل للآداب سنة 1952.

يدور موضوع هذه الرواية حول امرأة قاتلة مسممة. تيريز ديكيرو فتاة كسائر الفتيات أو هكذا تبدو على الأقل... مع ذلك كانت تشعر بغم وقلق مظلمين، لم تكن تعرف لهما معنى. تزوجت من برنار لأنه كان شقيق صديقتها الحميمة من جهة، ومن جهة ثانية، لأنه يملك ألفي هكتار من الأراضي المزروعة بأشجار الصنوبر، كان حب التملك في دمها لا يفارقها. بالواقع، لم تكن شقية بهذا الزواج، كما لم تكن سعيدة... ربما لم يكن باستطاعتها أن تقدر إلى أي مدى كانت بحاجة إلى العشق والهوى، خاصة بعد أن كانت تقرأ رسائل صديقتها -ابنة حميها أن- المتيمة بالشاب أزفيدو، هذه الرسالة التي بلغت فيها عاطفة الحب المتأججة حداً أدركت معه إلى أي درجة تفتقر هي إلى هذه العاطفة والأحاسيس. وهكذا أصبحت حياتها تنوء عليها يوماً بعد يوم، فلم تعد تستطيع أن تنسجم مع برنار، هذا الجلف الذي لا يفكر إلا بصيده وصنوبراته، وساعدتها الظروف للتقرب من أزفيدو، فأصبح بالنسبة لها رمز حياة حرة... وهكذا بدأت الأفكار الشيطانية تغزو مخيلتها فرافقتها لتهدم حياتها...
