يضم هذا الكتاب مجموعة من المقالات التي تتناول اللغة العربية تناولًا علميًا دقيقًا من وجهة نظر عدد من كبار المستشرقين المعاصرين المتخصصين في فروع مختلفة للعربية، وذلك بإشراف شيخ المستشرقين المعاصرين العلامة البروفيسور فيشر. وتندرج تلك المقالات تحت مفهوم "فقه اللغة" وقد عنيت في المقام الأول بالمباحث التاريخية من جهة حيث تتبعت مراحل العربية المختلفة لتحديد الخصائص المميزة لكل مرحلة وبيان علاقة العربية أخواتها الساميات على المستوى الصوتي والصرفي والنحوي والمعجمي الدلالي والعناية باستخلاص عوامل نهوضها وارتقائها، وبخاصة العوامل اللغوية والاجتماعية والثقافية الحضارية. ومن جهة أخرى اختصت بعض المقالات باللغة العربية في العصر الحديث فاهتمت بدراسة اللهجات العربية الحديثة للوقوف على سماتها وإيضاح علاقاتها بعضها ببعض وعلاقتها بالفصحى ولهجاتها القديمة. وهكذا يتضح هدف الكتاب الأساسي في تصحيح كثير من المعلومات القديمة غير الدقيقة المترددة في كتب فقه اللغة السابقة، وتقديم تصور مجمل عن الموقف المعاصر للباحثين من أهم قضايا فقه اللغة.
