يعد أنطونيو ماتشادو أكبر وأول شاعر في القرن العشرين، من حيث الريادة والأهمية، ينتمي لما يسمى بجيل الــ 1898، على الرغم من أنه دائماً ما يؤكد إنتمائه لجيل 1914، أول أجيال القرن العشرين، صنع من زملائه الأدباء ما سمي في حينه بحركة (إسترداد الحس الشعبي) كردة فعل ضد الأوضاع المتردية سياسياً وإجتماعياً وثقافياً خاصة بعد أن خسرت إسبانيا ثقلها الإستراتيجي في العالم كله.
من خلال أعمالهم الأدبية ركزوا على المحلية كصيغة جديرة برد الإعتبار للذات الإسبانة الجريحة.
تتجلّى عبقريته بشكل أكبر في البساطة المتناهية بالأسلوب واللغة، كما أن الوضوح والنزول للغة التخاطب جعلت من ظاهرته أكثر قرباً للواقع والعامة.
استطاع عبر الكلمة الموحية غير البعيدة عن بشر زمنه أو الأزمنة اللاحقة، أن يجترح لنفسه مدرسة وحقلاً خاصاً لم يشاركه فيه أغلب مجايليه، لكنه عبرها أيضاً استطاع التفرد والتعبير بلغة إيحائية توظف نفسها نحو الهدف الأسمى لغاية الكلمة وهي التواصل مع البشر، الحلقة الأساس لوجود الشاعر، وغايته حسب مفهومه الأول والأخير.
على الرغم من أنه في أواخر حياته كتب عن الحرب ومآسي الدمار الذي مر به بلده إسبانيا، إلا أنه يغلب على شعره التغني بالإنسان والطبيعة، جوهر التواصل والألفة الممكنة.
