أبو محمد عبد الملك ابن هشام بن أيوب الحميري، كاتب سير ومؤرخ بصري. كما كان عالماً بالأنساب واللغة وأخبار العرب. عاصر ابن هشام الشافعي والتقى به في مصر.
هذب السيرة النبوية ، وسمعها من زياد البكائي صاحب ابن إسحاق ، وخفف من أشعارها ، وروى فيها مواضع عن عبد الوارث بن سعيد ، وأبي عبيدة . رواها عنه محمد بن حسن القطان ، وعبد الرحيم بن عبد الله بن البرقي ، وأخوه أحمد بن البرقي . وله مصنف في أنساب حمير وملوك أبو محمد عبد الملك ابن هشام بن أيوب الحميري، كاتب سير ومؤرخ بصري. كما كان عالماً بالأنساب واللغة وأخبار العرب. عاصر ابن هشام الشافعي والتقى به في مصر.

والأصح أنه ذهلي كما ذكره أبو سعيد بن يونس ، وأرخ وفاته في ثالث عشر ربيع الآخر سنة ثمان عشرة ومائتين .

ما أجمل الجمال على الجمال، وما أحسن التمام مع الكمال، وما أبهى الضياء مع النور، وما أحلى القطر مع الشذور. درتان فريدتان، وجوهرتان ثمينتان، تنتظمان بعقد فريد. والدر يزداد حسناً وهو منتظم وليس ينقص قدراً غير منتظم
لقد كتب ابن هشام مقدمته (قطر الندى وبل الصدى) في قواعد النحو والإعراب، ثم كتب عليه شرحاً عدة نكتاً رافعة لحجابها، كاشفة لنقابها، مكملة لشواهدها، متممة لفوائدها، كافية لمن اقتصر عليها، وافية ببغية من جنح من طلاب العربية إليها.
ثم كتب كتابه (شذور الذهب في معرفة كلام العرب) وأعقبه بشرحه الذي تمم به شواهده وجمع شوارده، ومكن من اقتناص أوابده رائده، كما قال..
وها هو كتاب (نيل الأرب) يجمع بين درر القطر وجواهر الشذور، بشكل مبسط وميسور، تسهيلاً وتقريباً لوصول الطالب إلى بغيته وأربه بأدنى جهد، وأقصر طريق...
