لما كان علم التاريخ ومعرفة الأئمة من علماء الملة, من الأمور العلية, يعتنى به كل ذى همة زكية, إذ هم نقلة الدين وحملة الشريعة المحمدية, وبه يتميز الصالح من الطالح, والمسخوط من المقبول, ويعرف ذو العدل منهم ومن هو مجهول, فيعطى كل ذى حق حقه, كما ورد به أمر من الرسول, اعتنى الأئمة قديما وحديث بالوضع فيها على أنحاء متفاوتة, وأضرب متباينة, فبعضهم عرف المحدثين والرواة جرحا وعدالة, وبعضهم عرف أهل الفقه ومن لهم فيه مقالة, او انتسب إلى حملته وانتحاله وكان ممن سعى فى ذلك من أهل مذهبنا المالكية سعيا حثيثا, وجمع فيه ما تفرق عند غيره قديما وحديثا, الإمام الكامل,الجليل الفاضل, أبو الفضل عياض, ملأ الله تعالى ثراه من حماه أزاهير رياض. ثم تابعه جماعة اختصروا من مداركه بعض ما تيسر كابن حماد وابن رشيق وابن علون, وغيرهم من فضلاء الأعيان.
ثم جاء الإمام العلامة الحافظ القدوة أبو إسحاق إبراهيم بن فرحون المدنى, أدخل الله على رمسه الريح الهنى, فقطف من كلامه بعض ماذكر, واستدرك عليه جماعة من عنه تأخر, فرتبه على حروف المعجم, وبين فيه بعض من قد يخفى او يبهم, فهو وإن لم يوف من ذلك مطلوب الغرض, فلقد قام ببعض الحق المفترض.
فما زالت نفسى تحدثنى من قديم الزمان, وفى كثير من ساعات الأوان, باستدراكى عليه ببعض ما فاته أو جاء بعده من الأئمة الأعيان, فقيدت فيه بحسب الإمكان.
