للمشكلة الفلسفية طبيعة خاصة تتتفرد بها؛ فهى تبدأ بشىء بسيط للغاية بحيث لا يستحق الذكر، وتنتنهى بشىء غريب للغاية بحيث لا يصدقه أحد.! ولا تخرج الألوان عن هذا الوصف حين تخضع للبحث الفلسفى. إن اللون بالنسبة للفيزيائى هو ذلك الطول الموجى القابل للتحديد، وبالنسبة للفسيولوجى هو قيم الإثارة لخلايا الإحساس بشبكة العين، وبالنسبة للرسام هو ذلك الجوهر المتألق على لوحة الرسم، وبالنسبة للإنسان العادى هو ذلك الرداء الذى ترتديه المادة، والذى تمتنع رؤيتها بدونه. أما بالنسبة للفيلسوف فثمة نظريات عدة ذات مبررات ومنطلقات مختلفة؛ تنتقل بنا من كونه خاصية موضوعية وجوهرية للأجسام، إلى كونه خاصية استعدادية لدى المادة أو الكائن الحى، إلى كونه خاصية علاقية تربط البيئة بمن يقطنها، إلى كونه خاصية افتراضية أو مجرد وهم...، فهل ثمة نظرة توفيقية بين هذه الرؤى والنظريات المختلفة؟. ذلك ما يسعى إليه المؤلف عبر رحلة مثيرة فى عالم البحث اللونى، تؤكد أنه مازال بإمكاننا تذوق متعة أخرى من متع هذا العالم الغامض والمراوغ.
