هذا هو الكتاب الأول من سلسلة فن القراءة التي تتحدث عن شؤون وشجون القراءة: مهارات ومستويات وبرمجة وما يتبع ذلك. يتحدث هذا الجزء من السلسلة عن معنى القراءة ومفهومها وكيف غدت فناً له قواعده وضوابطه مرتبطاً بجملة من المهارات والآليات التي تجعل القراءة أبعد أثراً وأكثر فائدة. كما ويبحث العلاقة بين القراءة والتفكير، وبينها وبين اللغة، مبيناً أهمية ترقية مهارات القراءة في تطويرهما، في تحسين التفكير، وزيادة الحصيلة اللغوية. وانطلاقاً من تصنيف-بلوم-المشهور للأهداف المعرفية، يضع البحث تصنيفاً لمستويات القراءة، مستعيناً بما تحدث عنه-آدلر-في كتابه (كيف تقرأ كتاباً) عن مستويات القراءة. ولا شك أن الحديث عن مستويات القراءة ومهاراتها يدعو للحديث في إشكاليات من أشهر إشكاليات هذا الفن وهي تسريع القراءة والتي خصص لها بحث منفرد عرض فيه آراء الفريقين: المتحمسين والمشككين ليخلص البحث إلى وسطية ينتقل معها إلى برمجة القراءة وأهمية مراعاة الفروق الفردية فيها.
