"لكن في النهاية ما الليلة الواحدة؟ أمدٌ قصير، لا سيّما متى ما يعتمُ الليل مبكراً، ومبكراً يغرّد الطير، مبكراً يصيح الديك، أو أخضرُ واهٍ يتعجل، مثل ورقة شجر متقلبة، في جوف موجة. عدا أنَّ الليل، يعقبه ليل.
والشتاء يحمل مخزوناً من الليالي ويتعامل معها على قدم المساواة، بعدل، بأصابع لا تعرف الكلل. الليالي تطول؛ ظلمتها تشتد. بعضها ترفع عالياً كواكب صافية، أطباقاً ساطعة. أشجار الخريف، وإن هي خربة مسلوبة الأوراق، تلتقط وهج الأعلام الرثّة الممزقة تتضرَّم في ظلمة كهوف الكاتدرائية حيث الحروف الذهبية على صفحات الرخام تصِف الموت على أرض معركة وكيف للعظام أن تشحب وتحترق بعيداً في الرمال الهندية. أشجار الخريف تومض في ضوء القمر الأصفر، في ضوء أقمار الحصاد، الضوء الذي يلطّف من عناء الكادح، تملّس جذامة الزرع، تستنهض الموج الأزرق فيتلاطم رقيقاً على الشاطئ".بمثل هذا التأمّل الفلسفي، الانثيال اللغوي والوصفيّة الرائقة، تمتدّ على مساحة من ثلاثة أجزاء، ملحمة آل رامزي ومن هم يحيطون بهم، عبر زمن يمتدّ لعقد من السنوات. إنها رواية خالية من الحوارات تقريباً، كتبتها فرجينيا وولف بتأثير من أسلوب موجة (تيّار الوعي) الذي طغى تأثيره إبّان حقبة بواكير القرن الفائت، مقتفية آثار من سبقوها بالكتابة بهذا الأسلوب؛ جيمس جويس ومارسيل بروست، لتضيف إلى إرث الأدب العالمي ما دُعيَ لأن تصنّف على أنها واحدة من أفضل مائة.
