ويتألف الباب الأول من سبعة فصول، يتضمن أولها تعريفاً بمعدات الحاسوب وأهم المعدات المستخدمة للإدخال والإخراج بالإضافة إلى المكونات المادية للحاسوب ووظائفها، إذ يتطرق لوحدة المعالجة المركزية والذاكرة الرئيسية والإتصال بينهما، كما يوضح وسائط تخزين البيانات والمعلومات وكيفية إسترجاعها.
ويتناول الفصل الثاني برمجيات الحاسوب وأنواعها، بينما يوضح الفصل الثالث تراسل البيانات ومعدات وأنواع شبكات الحاسوب، ويبين الفصل الرابع تقنية المعلومات والإتصالات في حياتنا اليومية، ويتناول الفصل الخامس أمن المعلومات وحمايتها، أما الفصل السادس فيعرض المسائل القانونية المتعلقة بإستخدام الحاسوب، وينتهي الباب الأول بالفصل السابع الذي يعرض مفاهيم قضايا وأخلاقيات الحاسوب.
أما الباب الثاني من هذا الكتاب فيستعرض البرمجيات العامة وتطبيقاتها، إذ يبين في الفصل الثامن كيفية تشغيل الحاسوب عن طريق نظام التشغيل، ويعرف نظام تشغيل Windows 7. ويتحدث الفصل التاسع عن كيفية إنشاء وتحرير نصوص بأشكال مختلفة عن طريق معالج النصوص Microsoft Word 2010.
ويتناول الفصل العاشر الجداول الإلكترونية وعمل الرسوم البيانية بإستخدام Microsoft Excel 2010 ويشرح الفصل الحادي عشر مفاهيم في قواعد البيانات وكيفية إستخدام قواعد البيانات Microsoft Access 2010. ويقدم الفصل الثاني عشر كيفية تشغيل وإنشاء شرائح العرض التقديمي بما فيها النصوص والرسومات والصور المتحركة، ويشرح الفصل الثالث عشر كيفية إستخدام شبكة الإنترنت وتبادل الرسائل الإلكترونية.
