مع أن القاضي عبد الجبار ليس مبتكرا في علم الكلام ، بل سبقه اعلام شهد هو نفسه لهم بالفضل ، من مثل العلاف والنظام والجاحظ والجبائيان، وغيرهم إلا انه قد استفاد و لانزاع من ذلك التراث الفكري الذي خلفه معتزلة البصرة ومعتزلة بغداد في أثناء القرون الثلاثة من الثاني إلى الرابع ، فهو يناقش ويحلل ويعرض آراء السابقين وقد يقبل حينا بعضها وقد يرفض حينا اخر بعضها الاخر ، وانتهى من المناقشة والعرض والتحليل والتمحيص إلى مذهب متكامل في علم الكلام يجتمع حول أصول خمسة هى التوحيد والعدل والوعد والوعيد والمنزلة بين المنزلتين والأمر بالمعروف والنهي عن المنكر. وهكذا لم شتات المباحث الكلامية بين دفتي كتاب واحد وعرضها على الجمهور عرضا منسقا مرتبا متسلسلا. ولو ظهر القاضي بهذا الكتاب قبل ذلك بقرن من الزمان مثلا فاكبر الظن ان حظ مذهب الاعتزال كان قد ظفر بمصير آخر خلاف ما انتهى اليه في العالم الاسلامي. ويحتوي الكتاب على آراء علماء الكلام وخاصة آراء المعتزلة عن الاصول الخمسة وهى على الترتيب التوحيد والعدل والوعد والوعيد والمنزلة بين المنزلين والأمر بالمعروف و النهي عن المنكر.
