Abu Hamid al-Ghazali (1058-1111) est de loin l'auteur le plus connu et le plus controverse de la periode medievale musulmane. Le chemin vers le paradis (Minhaj) qu'il preconise est seme d'obstacles en tous genres. L'auteur a d'ailleurs constate que: << c'etait une voie ardue et un chemin difficile, aux nombreuses montees abruptes, extremement penible, aux vastes etendues, aux terribles fleaux, parsemees de nombreux obstacles et handicaps, ornees de perils et de precipices, pleine d'ennemis et de brigands, peu frequentee. C'est ainsi qu'elle doit etre parce qu'elle est la voie du Paradis. >>
Al-Ghazali, fidele a son habitude, va s'engager dans l'enumeration exhaustive des situations qui vont se presenter au devot soucieux de se rapprocher de Dieu.
Mais il avertit deja: rares sont ceux qui sont parvenues a franchir sans encombre les sept obstacles qui se dressent sur cette voie. C'est alors que l'adoration vouee a Dieu va prendre ici tout son sens.
