يعدّ "النسوية والقومية في العالم الثالث"، الكتاب الأول من نوعه الذي حاول دحض ما يتبناه كثيرون من أن النسوية في هذه البلاد ليست إلا أيديولوجيا أجنبية جلبها الغرب وعاشت بعد الكولونيالية كإرث تركته خلفها، وهي المقولة التي يتبناها التيار المحافظ.
ولكي تقدّم البراهين السياسية والوطنية والاجتماعية للنسوية في "العالم الثالث"، وضعت جاياواردينا على عاتقها مهمة توثيق تاريخ حركات تحرّر المرأة في البلاد الفقيرة المضطهدة سياسياً والمستنزفة اقتصادياً والمتأخّرة اجتماعياً، ومشاركتها في مقاومة الاستعمار والمساهمة في الحركات التحرّرية الوطنية الأخرى.
المفارقة، أن الطرف الآخر الذي كان الكتاب بمثابة تحدٍ له وردٍ عليه، هو اليسار، إذ تعتبر الكاتبة أنه غير آبه فعلاً بمسألة المرأة وقضيتها، حيث يتبنى هذا التيار مقولة "إن تحرّرت الطبقة العاملة، المرأة ستتحرّر تلقائياً".
غطّت المؤلّفة، واقع حركات تحرّر المرأة والدفاع عن حقوق الإنسان خلال النصف الثاني القرن التاسع عشر وحتى العقود الأولى من القرن العشرين.
ورغم أنه صدر عام 1989، لكنه ما زال الكتاب المرجع، الذي يؤرّخ لصراع المرأة في عدّة بلاد من "الشرق الأوسط" وآسيا، وشرق آسيا، ويحيط بتفاصيل الصراعات التي خاضتها النسوية ضد الفقر وغياب المساواة بكلّ أشكالها في الهند وتركيا وإيران ومصر واليابان والصين وكوريا وفيتنام وأندونيسيا وسريلانكا والفلبين.
وقد تناولت الباحثة تاريخ الحركات النسوية من حيث؛ علاقتها بالحضارة في تركيا، وبالإصلاح في مصر، وبالسلطة والقرار في إيران، والإصلاح الاجتماعي والقومية في الهند، وحركات التحرّر في أندونيسيا، والديمقراطية في الفلبين، والثورة في الصين، والمقاومة في كوريا، والتحدي الاقتصادي في اليابان.
