كان شعر عمر شبلي صداه في أزمنة الغربة والمنفى والوحدة، والعذاب، لقد عانى من ألم تعجز الكلمة عن نقله كما هو إلى الكلمة، فالكلمة في النهاية هي مرآة الشيء، وليست الشيء نفسه.
كان عميقاً إلى مستوى إحساسه بضرورة مساعدة اللغة على الحضور الكلي في النتاج، ولعجز الكلمة الخالقة والمخلوقة في آن، كان لا بدَّ من إلباس الشعر أرديةَ تساعده على نقل الدفق الروحي المتمرد على قاموسية الكلمة إلى خارج جسده الحزين في صحارى النفي والتشرد والعذاب أسراً وحرّاً في آن.
في شعر عمر شبلي ترى عذاباً عميقاً بعد خروجه من الأسر، حتى لكأنه كان يحمل سجنه معه إلى خارج زنزانته، ورغم كل هذا الحزن العميق ظلت أضواء روحه تسطع حتى لكأنه "شمسٌ منيرة سوداء" كما يقول المتنبي.
وفجأةً أومضت في ذهنه كلمة النِفّري المتصوف "كلما اتسعت الرؤيا ضاقت العبارة"، فعندما يحجب الظلام رؤية الدنيا وأشياءها عن المُغلّفِ به يلجأ هذا الإنسان المغلَّف بظلام الخارج إلى أضوائه الداخلية، تلك التي عنْون بها عمر شبلي أحمد دواوينه الشعرية "الضوء الأسود يسرقني"، حين قال بلسان أبيه الروحي العارف الرائي: /يا ولدي / لا تبحث عن ضوء لا يوجدُ فيك / فالضوء عميقٌ كالإيمان/.
هكذا إحساس يحتاج إلى أوان غير الكلمات القاموسية لنقله، إنّه يحتاج إلى الرمز الموحي بالكشف والرؤيا، كلما أدلهمَّ الظلام بأعبائه على النفوس الكبيرة أضاءت، حتى لكأنها خالقةٌ كينونةً للضياء الذي يتحدى ظلام الخارج ببروق الروح الداخلية.
كان لا بدّ من الرمز لنقل ما يقوله الشعر، لأن مهمة الشعر أبعد من وضوح الكلمات / المرايا /، وحتى ولو لم تكن المرايا داكنة.
يقول الشاعر "ت س إليوت" في تبيان المعنى الإيحائي والدلالي للرمز: "إن الشعر وسيلة إتصال حتى قبل أن يُفهم"، إذن لا بدّ من التدخل في وقار الكلمة والإستعانة بالرمز موحياً بإنعكاسات الداخل، كان الرمز في شعر عمر شبلي لغةً في اللغة، إنّ الرمز هو اللغةُ العليا في الشعر.
